Pair of ‘Palle’ stools by K.J. Pettersson & Söner, Sweden 1970s
This incredible pair of “Pall” or “Palle” stools was designed and manufactured by K. J. Pettersson & Söner Storvreta in the 1970s. Often misattributed to Axel Einar Hjorth.
These Palle stools are made of solid Northern European pine wood with several individual parts glued together and crafted into this stunning sculptural shape. Because of this method of composition and each stool being handcrafted each stool comes with a unique grain and pattern. This particular pair has a stunning grain and patina. These stools are one of the roughly two hundred pieces that were manufactured in Sweden.

Long misattributed to Axel Einar Hjorth, the “Palle” stool was finally correctly attributed in 2020 by Uppsala Auktionskammare to Swedish maker K.J. Pettersson & Söner.
Founded in 1933 in Storvreta by Karl Julius Pettersson and his sons Gösta, Nils, Karl-Erik, and Birger, the company grew from a small workshop into one of the region’s largest furniture manufacturers.
By 1948, Pettersson & Söner had opened a dedicated showroom, followed in 1953 by a larger factory that still stands today. Best known for innovative sofa beds with patented constructions. After 48 years, K.J. Pettersson & Söner closed in 1980, though its legacy lives on through designs like the “Pall” stool.
